'Gadget Guru' demonstrates new tech perfect for Labor Day weekend – WNDU-TV

The final holiday weekend of the summer is just about upon us, and there’s some really cool tech out there that can enhance the experience.

Verizon “Gadget Guru” Steve Van Dinter visited our station with some devices that can help make sure your weekend goes smoothly if you’re planning a party, a trip or just taking the long weekend off.

Here are the gadgets that Steve demonstrated to Terry McFadden. Watch the attached video to see the devices in action.

Motorola Moto Z2 Force

“I like to say this is the Transformer phone because you can attach these mods to it and give it new capabilities and powers. Here on this one I added a Hasselblad mod. That is a ten times optical zoom, so if you’re going to the Notre Dame game, this is a great way to zoom in and get those shots. Additionally, I’m talking about this gaming mod here. You take the phone, drop it here, and now when I can click it on I can actually play my game using these controllers here.”

UE Wonderboom

“We’re talking waterproof, drop-proof, 360-degree sound. It’s the end of summer, so a little bit of “Despacito,” but it sounds great and has this little clip on it so you can hang it from a bag and you can put it anywhere you want to hang it. It’s really easy and really portable, and that’s what I love about it. You don’t have to worry about damaging it, because things can really get rowdy on Labor Day weekend.”

Philips Hue LED Bulbs

“Next up, we’ve got a two-for-one. It’s a really cool bulb. What’s a party without some color? So these are the Phillips Hue bulbs. It looks like a traditional light bulb. These are LED, and one thing about them is that they have Wi-Fi chips built into them. This talks to your home Wi-Fi system. When I go on and turn on my kitchen lights, you look here on the iPad, you’re going to see in my kitchen, and you can see some color of light here. You can turn it off and on remotely. You can also change the color. One of any three million colors we’re talking about. So if you wanted to make it the color of Notre Dame’s football team, you could totally do it. The nice thing about this, we’re using a Nest Cam IQ. This actually knows the faces of the family members in the house, so if someone is spotted who’s not your family, you’re going to get notified. You’re going to want to know about that.”

DJI Osmo Go

“Last but not least, you are ready to take your Labor Day weekend to the next level with the DJI Osmo Go. What’s really cool about this is that you can actually shoot really stable videos. Notice as I’m turning it, it’s keeping it very stable. I shot some video earlier in this newsroom. Look at how stable that is. That is really amazing. That is not something you’re going to get with your general hands.”

Terry: It’s almost like an old-fashioned steady cam.

Steve: Absolutely, or it looks like a drone, like we had a drone flying through the newsroom.

Most of these items can be found at your local retailer, or you can go to verizonwireless.com.
