(Meredith) – Two strangers became good friends after chasing down a would-be thief who tried to get away with one of their laptops.
Hannie Dong was working at a Starbucks in Castro Valley, California Monday night when the suspect grabbed her laptop and ran away with it, KGO-TV reports.
The only customer who reportedly tried to intervene was Misty Welborn.
“I just heard this woman cry, ‘Give me my laptop!’” Welborn told the station. “I looked up and saw a woman chasing her.”
Without missing a beat, Dong and Welborn ran after the suspect who tried to jump into a getaway car parked around the corner.
“I felt like I had superhuman strength,” said Dong. “I ripped the door open and went in after her. I grabbed my laptop, she pulled my hair and I just tried to get out of her grasp.”
Welborn said she was amazed when Dong fought back.
“They thought they had a weak victim, but she’s a savage!” said Welborn.
Although police don’t recommend civilians chasing after criminals, at least one officer said he’s happy with the outcome in this situation.
“In her case, she was courageous,” said Sgt. Ray Kelly with the Alameda Sheriff’s Office. “She was not going to be a victim. She chased down those suspects and got her laptop back. We’re hiring at the sheriff’s office, so if she wants a job, please give us a call because we’re looking for people like that.”
The two women said they plan on keeping their day jobs, but one thing is for certain — this is an experience they won’t forget anytime soon.
