It's one gadget you say you can't live without – and it's not your mobile phone – Derby Telegraph

Have you ever wondered what we would do without sticky tape? Or shrink-wrap? Then again, I thought that correction-fluid would change the world but then someone went off and invented the word processor.

There is a whole new generation of journalists who don’t know what it is like to pound a manual typewriter, or try to find a working telephone for that matter but good luck to them. You can’t hold it against people for being young.

Anyway, I digress – although why get straight to the point when you can take the scenic route? – and what I really want to talk about this week is what gadgets we think we cannot do without in the 21st century.

Recently, a study was published claiming to list Britain’s favourite household gadget. I thought it would be the laptop or the smartphone. But, no, surprisingly, it is still the television set. Eighty-one years since the world’s first regular high-definition television service was received by the 100 or so well-heeled Londoners who had bought very expensive sets – at £100, half average Briton’s annual wage – TV still rules.

Could you live without your TV?

According to Currys PC World, that commissioned the study of 5,000 adults, 42% of us would not want to be parted from our TV. That compares with almost four in ten (37%) who would be lost without their smartphone, and 33% that couldn’t imagine life without their fridge.

The nation’s laptops (31%) came fourth in the poll of tech and gadgets we love, with the humble kettle completing the top five with 29%. Indeed, one in 20 Brits will be taking their kettle with them on their summer holidays next year, while the same number will be packing an iron in their suitcase.

Beauty appliances such as straighteners, electric toothbrushes and beard trimmers all featured on the list of gadgets we couldn’t live without, as did hair dryers, epilators and curling tongs. The retro foot spa just squeezed into the list of 30 gadgets we love. Kitchen appliances included blenders, coffee machines, food mixers and toasters, while four per cent of those questioned said they would literally be “lost” without their Sat-Nav.

Which gadget could you NOT live without?

Last place in the list was the pressure washer. I am not surprised. Have you ever tried to pressure-wash your drive? I did, and Mrs R was not best pleased. There was mud all over the front garden and the windows, and the clothes that I was wearing brought our washing machine to a juddering halt.

Stories that made you say…..what the?!

Strangely, a washing machine does not appear in this list of electrical things we cannot do without. I find that rather odd. Mrs R does often wistfully reminisce about washdays of old, helping her lovely mum, but I’ll wager she wouldn’t now relish getting out the dolly tub and the ponch on a winter Monday morning in the outhouse.

Personally, I should hate to be without a radio, or a wireless set as I still like to call it.
